Seven products fail: ÖKO-TEST tests repair shampoos

Repair shampoos promise to repair damaged hair in advertising campaigns. However, as is now well known, broken ends cannot be “repaired” with shampoos.

Repair shampoos still have their purpose: they can at least be used to conceal hair damage. The hair looks healthier.

Natural cosmetics prove themselves, well-known brands are among the losers: The magazine ÖKO-TEST (issue 05/2022) took a close look at the ingredients of repair shampoos.

50 products were put to the test, many of which scored well. 18 shampoos received the top grade “very good”, seven times the grade “good”. Test winners are almost exclusively natural cosmetic shampoos.

Test winners include:

  • Alverde Repair Shampoo Organic Avocado Organic Shea Butter by Dm
  • Bioturm Shampoo Repair (view at Douglas)
  • Bloomtime Repair Shampoo Organic Jojoba Organic Walnut by Netto
  • Nature Box repair shampoo from Schwarzkopf & Henkel
  • Sante Repair Shampoo Organic Olive Oil & Pea Protein
  • Annemarie Börlind Repair Shampoo by Börlind (see Douglas).

Criticism from ÖKO-TEST: Allergy-causing substances found

Particularly under criticism: PEG compounds that can make the skin more permeable to foreign substances. According to the ÖKO-TEST experts, many of the tested repair shampoos contain controversial halogenated organic compounds – but in very low levels, the testers note.

Background: Halogenated organic compounds are suspected of being able to trigger allergies. In the laboratory, the experts found problematic ingredients such as BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), the fragrances cinnamyl alcohol, hydroxycitronellal and isoeugenol.

A total of seven repair shampoos were not able to convince the ÖKO-TEST testers at all due to their problematic ingredients. They were penalized with the grade “poor” or “insufficient” and failed the test, including well-known brands: For example this Guhl Nature Repair Sampoo, Pantene Pro-V Vita Glow Repair & Repair Shampoo or John Frieda Frizz Ease Miracle Repair Shampoo.
