This is Oxymel: The sour honey simply explained

Honey mixed with vinegar, fruits and herbs sounds unusual. However, the viscous mixture is a very old and proven natural remedy. As with sauna sessions, you can increase your sensitivity to cold by taking the drink. You can also balance your mineral balance with it. This is very important if you have a higher need for vital substances.

The term derives from the Greek. Oxy means sour, mel means honey. This is where the word sour honey comes from.

This is how Oxymel works

Oxymel is made from just three ingredients: Honey forms the basis, followed by vinegar and other additions such as herbs or fruits, blossoms, spices and roots. Depending on what the honey mixture is to be used for, you can vary the additions a bit.

Honey has well-known properties. It has an antibacterial and antiviral, but also antifungal, growth-inhibiting, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effect. It is considered a powerful antioxidant capable of preventing free radicals. Honey is used in numerous clinical pictures to alleviate symptoms. Above all, respiratory diseases are in the foreground here. But it also helps with open wounds, cardiovascular or gastrointestinal diseases.

Vinegar also has an antioxidant effect. In addition, there are antimicrobial, antidiabetic and antihypertensive properties. Obesity can also be reduced with one intake, the cholesterol level can be lowered and tumor growth inhibited.

The added additions such as roots, herbs, spices or fruits also bring their own properties with them. They always agree on the actual use.

Instructions: Make Oxymel yourself

You don’t have to buy Oxymel, you can easily make it yourself. When shopping, make sure that you choose honey that is of good, high quality. The honey should be natural. This also applies to the vinegar used.

You choose the extras according to your needs. If you suffer from respiratory problems, choose thyme, sage or buckhorn, for example. Wild herbs or kitchen herbs are generally suitable. A look at the herb book helps a lot here. When it comes to fruits, smaller wild fruits such as sea buckthorn or rose hips are recommended. Raspberries or blackberries can also be processed well. Garlic, turmeric, ginger, horseradish, aniseed, cinnamon and fennel are also recommended.

Weigh the ingredients. You need triple the amount of honey, single amount of vinegar, and single amount of select toppings. In order to bottle the honey later, you need a screw-top jar, which you first sterilize.

  1. Mix 3 parts honey and 1 part vinegar in the glass.
  2. Chop or chop selected additions (1 part). Small fruits can be pressed a little so that the skin bursts open. Cut larger fruits into small pieces.
  3. Add additions to the honey and vinegar mixture and stir. The additions must not float on the surface (danger of mold), finally press them down again.
  4. Close the jar tightly. Put in a dark place and leave for four weeks.
  5. Rotate the glass or shake or shake it gently once a week.
  6. Strain out the content after the brewing time. Pour the liquid ingredients into a sterilized bottle or screw-top jar. Discard the solid ingredients.

correct application

The application depends on the composition in which the sour honey was produced and what symptoms it is supposed to alleviate. It is therefore to be considered individually.

To strengthen the immune system and prevent diseases, adults should take 1 to 3 tablespoons per day. Half the dose is sufficient for children.

The drink should not be taken pure. Pour the appropriate dose into a glass of water (150ml) and stir well. Then sip the glass.

Useful tips

Oxymel is not a drug that is taken permanently. Take it every day for three weeks. Then you take a one-week break. After the break, you can resume a three-week intake.

If you don’t like drinking it dissolved in water, you can also use it as a dressing in salads or as a base for refreshing drinks. It can also add a great touch and health effect to your dishes when cooking.

For food to be cooked, however, be careful not to overheat the honey. It loses its effectiveness with high heat. Therefore, in this case, pour it over the food at the end of the preparation or stir it in when you remove the pot from the stove.
