Experts sound the alarm: Why you should never sleep with the room door open

For better ventilation, to hear children or pets at night or for the feeling of security: Many people sleep at night with the room door open.

However, the Institute for Security Research (FSRI) in the USA warns against this.

According to a study by security researchers, most people think it’s safer to sleep with the door open. However, exactly the opposite is the case.

Opened room door is a danger in case of fire

In the event of a fire, a closed door can mean the difference between life and death. If the entrance to the bedroom is sealed, flames and toxic smoke can spread less quickly, the oxygen level is maintained and the temperature does not rise as much.

According to the safety institute, those affected have only had an average of three minutes to escape a house fire in recent years. That is significantly less than about ten years ago.

The reason for this is the increased use of plastics in house construction, but also in furniture and decorative items. The easily combustible materials ensure that a fire spreads faster.

Closing the door is therefore a suitable strategy to protect yourself in the event of a possible fire.

Awareness campaign to ensure more security

The security organization and the fire brigade therefore advertised with a US campaign that more people close their doors before going to bed.

Incidentally, this should also apply to the door to the children’s room. In addition, smoke detectors ensure safety by triggering an alarm in the event of a fire.

In Germany, fortunately, technical devices have long been mandatory in apartments and facilities.
