Effects on your health: why you should turn off your cell phone at night

If you put your smartphone on flight mode at night, you’ve already taken a big step in the right direction. However, it would be better if you switched off the device completely overnight.

In the long run, exposure to the smartphone can cause stress and other health problems.

Turning off your cell phone at night isn’t just for health reasons.

protection against radiation

You may also be one of those people who leave their cell phone on the bedside table or even in bed next to the pillow while they sleep.

Even if the transmission of radiation via smartphone has not yet been finally clarified, according to the Federal Office for Radiation, exposure to electromagnetic fields should be as rare as possible.

If you switch off your smartphone at night, you minimize the radiation transmission many times over.

Healthy sleep without a smartphone

The mobile phone is switched on around the clock, messages, e-mails and calls constantly reach us. So many people complain about having trouble concentrating.

A student from the International School of Management in Hamburg showed in her thesis that deliberate smartphone breaks have a positive effect on mental recovery. Regular downtime reduces the need for cell phones and makes it easier to focus on work or relax.

It is therefore advisable, instead of using Instagram, WhatsApp & Co. before going to bed, to simply switch off the smartphone and read a book or listen to an audio book, for example.

Breaks are good for the battery

Most people don’t use their cell phones at night and leave them on the bedside table while they sleep, either on standby or on the charger.

Charging times that are too long, for example overnight, damage the lithium-ion batteries and reduce their capacity.

And even if the smartphone is not connected to the charger but is lying on the bedside table in idle mode, it still draws electricity. This happens either due to apps running in the background or because the phone is constantly connected to the cell tower.

The result: the mobile phone has to be charged more often.

However, many smartphones have a certain number of charge cycles that they can withstand before the battery performance noticeably decreases. That means: if you charge your mobile phone overnight for too long, the battery will be damaged; if you don’t charge your phone at night, it still loses power and you have to charge it.

It is better to simply turn off the cell phone to conserve the battery and thus extend the life of the smartphone.
